“Vengan, síganme,” dijo Jesús, “yo les enseñaré cómo pescar personas.” Y enseguida dejaron las redes y lo siguieron. Mateo 4:19-20

Esta historia siempre me ha desconcierta. Pedro dejo todo lo que conocía por seguir a Jesús. Dejo su antiguo modo de vivir, tirando su red fielmente e incuestionablemente, para confiar en el camino que Cristo puso para él. Pedro no sabía a donde se dirigía; solo tenía que confiar que Jesús lo dirigiría a un buen lugar. No sé tú, pero yo siempre he luchado con la idea de tirar mi red mundana y ciegamente seguir a Cristo. Siempre culpo el hecho de nunca saber qué paso tomar hacia qué dirección. Es en esos momentos que pienso en Pedro. Tal vez Pedro tenía momentos similares en su jornada; tal vez él también tenía dudas, pero recordaba que sus pasos estaban en las manos del creador, y sabía que los caminos de Dios eran buenos.

Seguir los pasos de Cristo donde sea que él me llama a ir me ha llevado a muchos (a lo que me gusta llamar) “momentos de Dios”, momentos en los que siento la presencia de Dios, escucho su voz, o veo sus milagros. El confiar en sus caminos me ha llevado a momentos de adoración y alabanza en los 66 acres y encontrar soledad en los lugares menos pensados, encontrar un buen momento de Dios en un salón de orientación de colegio en la Universidad de Harding, llorando frente a un profesor de Biblia (de quien no sabía ni el nombre) y mostrándome a Jesús por medio de sus sabias palabras y su buen corazón. Por último, confiando en el camino de Dios para mí me trajo a este aprendizaje como pasante.

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Matthew 4:19-20

This story has always baffled me. Peter dropped everything he knew to follow Jesus. He left his old way of life, dropping his net faithfully and unquestionably, to trust the path Christ set out for him. Peter didn’t know where he was going next; he just had to trust that Jesus would lead him to a good place. I don’t know about you, but I have always struggled with the idea of dropping my worldly net and blindly following Christ. I always blame it on the fact that I never know which first step to take in what direction. It’s in those times that I think of Peter. Maybe Peter had similar moments in his journey; maybe he had doubts too, but remembered that his steps were in the hands of the Creator, and knew God’s ways were good.

Following Christ’s footsteps wherever he calls me to go has led me to many (what I like to call) “God moments”, times where I feel God’s presence, hear His voice, or see His miracles at work. Trusting His path for me has led me to times of worship and praise on the 66 acres and finding solitude in the most unlikely places, finding a God moment in a Harding University classroom at college orientation, crying in front of a Bible professor (whom I did not even know the name of) and showing me Jesus through his wise words and kind heart. Lastly, trusting God’s path for me led me to this apprenticeship.

De donde yo soy, si no eres dueño de un par de chacos (estilo de sandalias) o una hamaca ENO, eres cuestionado en tu autenticidad como cristiano. Yo pongo mucha de mi identidad en estas modas cristianas, intentando crear la imagen cristiana perfecta de mí para transmitir otros. El problema era que me enfoqué más en mi imagen espiritual que en mi relación espiritual con Cristo, y me dejó sintiéndome vacía e insatisfecha porque yo buscaba aprobación y elogio de mis amigos que por Dios.

En la sociedad de hoy, la gente es consumida por imágenes y modas, y en nuestra cultura joven cristiana enfrentamos el mismo problema. Por experiencia propia, honestamente puedo decir que solía constantemente comparar como yo me veía como cristiana a otros de mi edad, tanto en persona como en medios sociales, y sé que no soy la única. Como cultura joven cristiana, estamos muy envueltos en nuestros propios mundos como para de verdad tomarnos el tiempo de enfocarnos en Dios. Nos dirigimos a nuestros compañeros cristianos y medios sociales para crecer en nuestra fe, en lugar de dirigirnos a Cristo. Gastamos más tiempo “twitteando” y dando “me gusta” a versículos bíblicos que la gente pone, que en sí leer versos en nuestras biblias. Comenzamos a creer que los versículos que ponemos en Facebook son más importantes que alcanzar a otros y compartir el evangelio cara a cara. Hemos creado estas grandiosas imágenes cristianas de nosotros mismos, pero las imágenes están faltas de contenido y no tienen significado real. Hemos puesto nuestras identidades y vidas en estas imágenes, solo para darnos cuenta que todo lo que hemos creado es una bella foto que no tiene sustancia.

Where I’m from, if you don’t own Chaco’s or an ENO hammock, you are questioned on your authenticity as a Christian. I put so much of my identity into these Christian trends, trying to create the perfect Christian image of myself to broadcast to others. The problem was that I focused more on my spiritual image than my actual spiritual relationship with Christ, and it left me feeling both empty and unsatisfied because I was seeking approval and praise through my peers rather than through God.

In today’s society, people are consumed by images and trends, and in our Christian youth culture we still face the same problem. From personal experience I can honestly say that I used to constantly compare how I looked as a Christian to others my age, both in person and on social media, and I know I am not the only one. As a young Christian culture, we are too wrapped up in our own worlds to actually take time to focus on God. We turn to our Christian peers and social media to grow in our faith, rather than turning to Christ. We spend more time “retweeting” and “liking” Bible verses people post and tweet, than actually reading verses from our Bibles. We start to believe that the verses we post on Facebook are more important than reaching out to others and spreading the Gospel face to face. We’ve created these great Christian images of ourselves, but the images lack content and have no real meaning behind them. We’ve put our identities and our lives into these images, only to realize that all we have created is a pretty picture that has no substance.
