The Christian Image

Where I’m from, if you don’t own Chaco’s or an ENO hammock, you are questioned on your authenticity as a Christian. I put so much of my identity into these Christian trends, trying to create the perfect Christian image of myself to broadcast to others. The problem was that I focused more on my spiritual image than my actual spiritual relationship with Christ, and it left me feeling both empty and unsatisfied because I was seeking approval and praise through my peers rather than through God.

In today’s society, people are consumed by images and trends, and in our Christian youth culture we still face the same problem. From personal experience I can honestly say that I used to constantly compare how I looked as a Christian to others my age, both in person and on social media, and I know I am not the only one. As a young Christian culture, we are too wrapped up in our own worlds to actually take time to focus on God. We turn to our Christian peers and social media to grow in our faith, rather than turning to Christ. We spend more time “retweeting” and “liking” Bible verses people post and tweet, than actually reading verses from our Bibles. We start to believe that the verses we post on Facebook are more important than reaching out to others and spreading the Gospel face to face. We’ve created these great Christian images of ourselves, but the images lack content and have no real meaning behind them. We’ve put our identities and our lives into these images, only to realize that all we have created is a pretty picture that has no substance.

“It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for.” Ephesians 1:11 MSG

Yes, we should be images of Christ, but that image should not be based on our looks, it should be based on our actions and our faith. I have learned that you should not place your identity in worldly things. Despite the great image you can create for yourself, it will never compare to or satisfy you like an actual relationship with Christ can. No matter how many Christian trends you follow, it’s important to know that your true identity is found in Christ, not the world, and once you establish yourself in Jesus, you will truly learn who you are and what you are living for, and your worldly image will no longer matter.
