Denton Known for Its Benevolence

People coming to us for assistance often remark that they heard about Singing Oaks through agencies in Dallas, Plano, McKinney or other area cities. They also remark that they came to Denton because they knew that they would receive help. Because of that, we probably have more homeless family inquiries than other city of our size in the Metroplex.

These facts will hopefully be of interest to you.

  1. Food Pantries – 18 agencies in the area that distribute food. Argyle; Asbury Methodist- Denton; Christian Community Action-Lewisville; Denton Community Food Center, Inc. –Denton; Denton County WIC; Lake Cities Community Food Pantry; Little Elm Area Food Bank; Meals-on-wheels, Denton; Our Daily Bread, Denton; Pilot Point Goodfellows; Roanoke Food Pantry; Shepherd’s Hands, Ft. Worth; First Baptist Church, Denton; Vision Ministries, Denton; The Shepard’s Storehouse, Pilot Point; H.O.P.E. Food Pantry, Aubrey; and Singing Oaks Church of Christ, Denton. Each agency has its own rules relating to who is eligible and how many times per month a family or individual can ask for assistance.
  2. Housing Assistance/Eviction Prevention – 7 agencies: Community Services, Inc., Denton & McKinney; HOPE, Inc., Denton; Interfaith Ministries – Denton; Metrocrest Social Service Center, Carrolton, Farmers Branch, Addison & Coppell; Salvation Army, Denton County; and Singing Oaks Church of Christ – Denton.
  3. Clothing Distribution – 6 agencies: Family Resource Center of North Texas, Denton; Habitat for Humanity – Ruth’s Room, Denton; Northwest Christian Community Services, Roanoke; Pilot Point Goodfellows; Vision Ministries, Denton; and Singing Oaks Church of Christ – Denton.
  4. Depression/Abuse problems – 2 agencies: Denton County Friends of the Family and First Step Denton County Outreach Program.

Even with all these possibilities for assistance Singing Oaks had 635 families visit during July, 2015. We were opened 9 days in July and had 19 visits each day. We distributed 141 bags of non-perishable groceries along with a loaf of bread and 1 meat product (when available). We gave away 790 clothing items which includes shoes. Many of these families and individuals were referred to us from agencies mentioned above. So often we are told we came to you because you are the only people we can hope to get help from. We also gave out 8 bicycles and many bibles.

I know you are glad that this church is involved in doing what Jesus told us to do. What we do doesn’t come from an individual who would deserve praise, but from a church full of caring people who are very much appreciated by many in this area. Thank you for what you do to help keep this work going.
