How many people like to wait? Do we even like the word?

Waiting is something we have to live with. It is not something that we have to do sometimes; it is a reality we have to live with on a daily basis. It is a cycle we all live with. Waiting is not just a part of this life but we even have to wait for what is to come in the after-live.

Is waiting difficult? Easy? Advisable?

Waiting is something we do. Waiting can be a spiritual discipline. Let us think on this for a little while and we will start at the age of six.

Six year old kids are at home waiting for the great moment when they will go to school. Other children who are already in school wait patiently all day long to go back home. Some kids can’t wait to go to High School. High School students can’t wait for the time when they will be kids no more. They just cannot wait to become independent and get out of the house. They wait for the time to go to their favorite University, and then to find a job.

Once they have their dream job they think about spending the rest of their lives with their soul mate. Once they get married, they wait for the time when their first baby will be born. I don’t have any kids yet. I have no idea how long nine months really is but I am also waiting for the wonderful day to hear my kids first words, “Mama” or “Papa”. After those first words come the first steps, and later the first day of school. Then the cycle starts all over again. This is a cycle we all go through and we did not mention all those parents who have to wait for the time to become grandparents.

There are many other examples of waiting in our lives. Some of us are waiting for the next birthday, the holidays and vacations. Some people are waiting on that big raise, purchasing their first home or their next car. Some of you reading this are just waiting until the end of the work day, or the weekend.

When we do something nice for others, we hope or expect that we will hear at least the kind words of “Please” and ”Thank You”. For sports fans some people are waiting impatiently for the MLB season, March Madness and the NBA playoffs. If your team is not playing this weekend some of you are waiting for the next NFL season. Personally I’m waiting for something even bigger like “The World Cup” and the Kentucky Wildcats next championship! Even closer to my heart, I am waiting for the long awaited reunion with my wife, Nidia, who is in Colombia.

The truth is that every day we wait for something, often with great expectation. The Bible also gives us many examples of people who waited.

Noah waited patiently for over a year to come out of the ark. Genesis 8:13-16.

Abraham waited not so patiently to receive the promise to become a “great nation”, Genesis 12:2.

Jacob waited fourteen years to marry Rachel Genesis 29.

The Jews were waiting for the coming of the Messiah … some Jews are still waiting.

We are all waiting for many things to happen in our lives. Some of these things are important and some things are not so important. We wait on things that impact our lives but what about the afterlife? How much time do we spend thinking on the most important event that will ever matter for today and every tomorrow? Do we wait for Jesus to come with much expectation or with little expectation? Where is your hope? Where is your trust?

Psalms 25:1-5 (TNIV):
1 In you, Lord my God, I put my trust.
2 I trust in you; do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me.
3 No one who hopes in you will ever be put to shame, but shame will come on those who are treacherous without cause.
4 Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths.
5 Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

A cuantos les gusta Esperar? Nos gusta esta palabra? Nos gusta todas aquellas palabras que están relacionas con esta gran palabra Esperar.

Esperar es algo con lo que tenemos que vivir, no solo por algún tiempo o en determinadas circunstancias, sino que es algo con lo que vivimos diariamente y si nos ponemos a pensar esto es un ciclo que se repite en cada uno de nosotros, es diario, constaste e inclusive después de esta vida terrenal y no sabremos más allá de todo esto.

Esperar es algo fácil? Es sencillo? Es recomendable?

Esperar es algo que nosotros hacemos. Puede ser una disciplina espiritual. Pensemos por un momento acerca de Esperar.

y empecemos a la edad de 6 años:

Los niños a la edad de seis años están esperando el gran día para ir a la escuela. Otros que ya están en la escuela esperan pacientemente todo el día para regresar a casa porque no quieren estar en la escuela, para después esperar varios años para terminar la escuela y después ir al High School. Esperan llegar a una edad determinada para dejar de ser niños y llegar a ser jóvenes y durante ese tiempo esperar para salir de casa y ser independientes. Esperan ir a la Universidad y encontrar un trabajo.

Una vez ya tienen el trabajo de sus sueños esperan por el príncipe azul o por esa princesa con quien esperan pasar el resto de sus vidas hasta que la muerte los separe. Después de esto esperan el día en que tendrán el primer bebe. Yo no tengo niños todavía. No tengo idea de cuánto tiempo realmente es esperar durante nueve meses, también estoy esperando por ese maravilloso día en que escuchare por primera vez a mi hijo o hija decir papá o mamá. Después esperar los primeros pasos y luego el primer día de escuela. Así se el ciclo comienza otra vez. Este es un ciclo de la vida por el que todos pasamos, y que me dicen de aquellos que después de todo este proceso están esperando en ser abuelos.

Tenemos muchos más ejemplos de esperar en nuestras vidas: Algunos de nosotros esperamos el día de cumpleaños, los días feriados y las vacaciones. Algunas personas esperan un buen aumento en el salario, comprar la primer casa, y el carro nuevo. Algunos de los que están leyendo esto están esperando que termine el día de trabajo, el próximo fin de semana.

Cuando hacemos algo por otras personas, esperamos escuchar por lo menos las palabras mágicas “Por favor” y “Gracias”. Para los que son aficionados al deporte algunos impacientemente esperan por la temporada de MLB, March Madness, y NBA playoffs. Y si su equipo favorito no está jugando este fin de semana algunos de ustedes están esperando la próxima temporada NFL. Personalmente yo estoy esperando por algo todavía más grande La Copa del Mundo y el próximo campeonato de los Kentucky Wildcats. Incluso más cerca de mi corazón estoy esperando el tan ansiado encuentro con mi esposa aquí en este lugar.

La verdad es que cada día esperamos por algo y algunas veces con ansias y gran expectativa. La Biblia nos da muchos ejemplos de personas que esperaron.

Noé espero pacientemente por más de 1 año para salir del arca Génesis 8.13-16

Abraham espero no pacientemente para recibir la promesa de Dios “hare de ti una gran nación” Génesis 12.2. Sabes todo lo que paso en la vida de Abraham y el tiempo que paso esperando hasta que esa promesa comienza a ser una realidad?

Jacob espero siete años para tener a Raquel como esposa (…y le parecieron como pocos días porque la amaba) Génesis 29.20 y sabemos que trabajo siete años más por ella.

Los judíos esperaron la llegada del Mesías y algunos todavía la esperan.

Todos estamos esperando por muchas cosas que suceden en nuestras vidas. Algunas de estas cosas son importantes y hay cosas que no son muy importantes. Esperamos en cosas que impactan nuestras vidas, pero ¿qué acerca de lo que pasa con la otra vida? ¿Cuánto tiempo pasamos pensando en el evento más importante que tiene más importancia para hoy y mañana todos los días? ¿Esperamos a Jesús que venga con mucha expectativa, con insistencia o con poca expectativa e insistencia? ¿Dónde está tu esperanza? ¿Dónde está tu confianza?

Salmos 25:1-5:
1 A ti, oh Jehová, levantaré mi alma.
2 Dios mío, en ti confío; No sea yo avergonzado, No se alegren de mí mis enemigos.
3 Ciertamente ninguno de cuantos esperan en ti será confundido; Serán avergonzados los que se rebelan sin causa.
4 Muéstrame, oh Jehová, tus caminos; Enséñame tus sendas.
5 Encamíname en tu verdad, y enséñame, Porque tú eres el Dios de mi salvación; En ti he esperado todo el día.
