The World Is Flat

“So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. – Galatians 3:26-29 (NIV)

We are living in amazing times. I love the title of one of Thomas Friedman’s books, “The World Is Flat.” What he means is that the free markets are turning the world into a single, global marketplace. People, money and ideas have never been so mobile or had such huge possibilities open to them. The Iron and Bamboo curtains are long down. Third world economies are opening up to us and we to them.

Whether this is a crisis or an opportunity depends on how you look at it. Many would see this only as a threat to the status quo. Others of us thank God that we are alive now. I do. I think the Apostle Paul would if he were alive today.

What a great time to be a Christian! A hundred years ago 2/3 of all the Christians in the world lived either in Europe or North America. Today that is reversed. Today millions in China worship Jesus as Lord, and they are sending thousands of missionaries around the world. Africa has more Christians than we do in the USA, and they are devout. There are more members of the Church of England in Africa, by far, than there are in the British Isles. The biggest church in Great Britain is The King’s Way International Church, started by two African ministers.

The future is global and multicultural. And, if you look at Denton you see it. We have a couple thousand foreign students, multiple immigrant communities from around the world, and the largest group of all is the Hispanic community. What an opportunity! Immigrants are the most receptive people to the gospel.

Look around you at Singing Oaks. We are already a multi-ethnic church: black, white, Asian with a few people of Hispanic background. How exciting that we are on the cusp of a new initiative to reach that latter group. Andres Badillo will lead this work, and he will be calling on us to partner with him as Singing Oaks embraces this community.
