Over the summer the Church launched several mission trips across the world. Some to Greece, Africa, or Mexico. One of these trips was for the youth group to go to a church in the inner city of Tulsa, Oklahoma. We had the opportunity to have special time with our “Little Buddies” and form Kingdom relationships with them.
To begin, Camp Contact is a three-week camp at the church for K-5th graders to attend during the summer. Their theme was to “Explore S’More about JESUS.” Each week, different youth groups were invited to volunteer and spend time with the children as they strive with joy. I have to say, I made connections and got to know more of these kids backgrounds. Some came from broken homes, several knew about their parents difficult relationships, and others left me speechless. I believe the idea that God gives his hardest battles to the strongest soldiers. Deuteronomy 3:22 says: “Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you.”
My most happy moment on the trip was meeting my own Little Buddy, Navaeh. She is about 6 years old, with the biggest heart. On our first day at the church, she was shy and very attached to our shepherd. Never would I have expected her to open up to me and choose me as her Big Buddy. I realized all she wanted and needed was a little bit of love and assurance. Throughout the week, she would talk to me about herself, her family, and anything she could think of. Although I couldn’t help in her situation, I understood how she felt about only being able to see her dad on the weekends. I know it is not something to compare because our reasons and lifestyles are very different, but the thought got to me. I consider myself having an average life with my parents still together. I identified with Navaeh because my dad’s work takes him away for the week and we only get to see him on weekends. However, I know God has given us all patience and hope while my dad is in the process of finding something better.
All in all, this youth mission trip made me realize how our lives are intertwined and how we can impact others. I’ve learned to be grateful for where I am today, and for what I have.
