By now most of you know that I will be stepping down from my role as Children’s Minister. I had not expected for this to be a long term position for me, but had merely accepted the job to help stabilize the ministry until the search began for a replacement. I believe it’s time to begin that search.
“One, two… second set of five… and snip. One, two… second set of five… and snip.” I talk to myself when I work in the yard. Sometimes I carry on very clever conversations. I have many times solved the world’s healthcare crisis, and occasionally solved the world’s financial crisis too! But most of the time I just mindlessly chatter and today was one of those days.
Our whole lives we’re taught the concept of “give and take.” You do for me, I do for you. I compromise, you compromise. I scratch your back, you scratch mine.
With Jesus, nothing was as it seemed. The King was born in modest surroundings, to ordinary parents. No palace, no army, no riches or gold. Is it any wonder then that “give and take” with Jesus took on a different meaning?
“Who seeks for heaven alone to save his soul,
May keep the path, but will not reach the goal;
While he who walks in love may wander far,
Yet God will bring him where the blessed are.”
Usually at this point the idea for a blog post has already been rolling around in my mind. But my mind’s been packed to the brim with Christmas plans, parties and lists.
Growing up we made yearly visits to my father’s family in Mississippi. His mother was one of the few members to have moved away from the area, so we were welcomed to the old home place by a multitude of great-aunts and uncles, and second cousins and their children. Aunt Hazel and Aunt Daisy still lived in the house where my great-grandparents had raised their 9 children and the house had not changed much in the intervening years. To say that it was simple is an understatement and it was my father who actually built them an indoor bathroom. Nestled deep in 600 wooded acres, it was the perfect playground for city kids.
