A Good Investment

Being in my 60’s I do think about investments every now and then; it’s hard not to in our culture. I get bombarded all the time with information about the stock market, interest rates and how I should be saving for the future. Then I read a passage like Matthew 6:19-21 for a true prospective about the most important investments.

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

I have seen a lot of storing up (even hoarding) in my life in all types of people – the rich and the poor. I have also seen (and experienced) these earthly treasures stolen, destroyed, thrown away or lost causing much hardship and sorrow. We cannot rely on these earthly treasures!

Instead we are challenged to store up or invest in a different kind of treasure, “treasures in heaven.” He does not say exactly what that investment looks like, but I think it has something to do with giving, serving and sharing. It’s relationship with God and others. It is kingdom living flowing from people with a new identity whose hearts are given over to Jesus – the true treasure.

As a church we encourage members to make those investments every day. We also plan special days for members to store up these kinds of treasures. We have such a time planned on the weekend of November 15 – 17. We are calling it GO DENTON because we are going to our community to serve and share the gospel. We came up with the idea while on the Athens Go Trip in June. We want to intentionally go to our own city like we did there.

It will all start on Friday evening. We are gathering to experience what it might be like if we were living in a country closed to Christianity. We will be at the building reading, praying, worshiping and hearing from those who have experienced persecution. It will be for all ages and will continue on the 66 acres for those who want to stay late.

The next day we will be serving in different capacities around the city. Some will be at the church for evangelism training and then go out to practice what they learned on the college campuses or they will go to homes of those who have visited our church or food pantry. Others will be involved in service to those in the apartments across the street, the Salvation Army, and a local hospital. It will end with gathering together to hear what God has done through us.

Please mark your calendar for all or part of this event. This weekend will in some ways simulate a short-term mission trip. If you are thinking about going on one of our 2020 Go Trips you should come. But really this is for everyone! As a church we must go and keep going in our own context. Invest now! GO DENTON!
