Can you even begin to imagine what it would be like to be completely happy? Can you imagine unbounded joy? Limitless energy? Total passion? Can you conceive what that would be like? No? Don’t feel bad. There are three good reasons why you can’t… three good reasons why we are not (yet) completely happy.
First: Even The Best Things Here Are Not Enough.
This is a beautiful world and God has given us amazing gifts. But God has put a longing in our hearts that is far deeper than any of them. He wants us to enjoy His gifts but not to be content merely with them. Greater than all the gifts is the Giver Himself. Only He can fill our hearts completely. We know that one day we will no longer “see in a glass darkly, but face to face.” (1 Corinthians 13:12). Until then we wait with longing for Him.
Second: Our Hearts Aren’t Big Enough For What We Have Here.
What we have is more than we could have asked or imagined. We are too small and our hearts are too small. We can only be still and ask that God would open our minds and expand our hearts so that we can take in and appreciate what we have… to experience at least some of His glory.
Third: Every Good Thing Here Comes To An End… For Now.
All earthly things come to an end. Everything comes to an end. All we love here comes to an end. “This world is passing away along with its desires.” (1 John 2:17). Every temporary good is an appetizer for the eternal. Now “we know in part… but when the partial comes the partial will pass away.” (1 Corinthians 13:9-10).
Our God Is real!
