Rest

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD,
whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8 NIV

What a beautiful picture Jeremiah paints for us here: a vision of calm, serenity and peace…a vision of a life rooted in deep soil.

And, what a contrast this is to life today, in this hurried, harried world of ours, as we dart from one thing to another. No society has ever had more options than ours. And this is true in every facet of life. We have more tools available, more gadgets and more diversions. We have learned to multitask in our work and to be distracted in the “down time”.

But, are we any the wiser for it all? Have we found the meaning beyond it all? Or, are our lives ten miles wide and have an inch deep? In 2012 the theme for Singing Oaks is Rest.

My sermon series will all focus on this. As a church we will pursue this theme in tangible ways. In March we will have an all-church retreat at Camp Eagle…a retreat in which we will seek rest and renewal in God.

Saint Augustine once prayed these words to God, “Oh Lord the heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” I hope you will join us in seeking that rest.
